Former Miss Lubbock dies following accident
Former Miss Lubbock Ashly Horton, 23, died Sunday from injuries she suffered in a car accident in the Dallas area.
Horton, who was living in her hometown of Richardson, reigned as Miss Lubbock in 1993 and competed in the Miss Texas Scholarship Pageant.
She was a 1991 graduate of Berkner High School in Richardson, and she had attended Texas Tech, majoring in nursing with a specialization in anesthesiology.
Her appearance in the Johnny Highs Country Music Review, a nationally renowned country music show in Dallas, spurred her to enter her first pageant, which she won.
After winning the Miss Lubbock crown, Horton told The Avalanche-Journal that she had been bitten by the singing bug and wanted to pursue a career in music.
She starred in the Phoenix Theatre production of "The Fantasticks'' in 1993.
Survivors include her mother, Rebecca Horton of Richardson; her father, Bill Horton of Garland; a sister, Taylor Horton of Richardson; a brother, William Horton of Richardson; her maternal grandmother, Betty Chamberlin of Euless; and her paternal grandmother, Mary Ellen Horton of Atwood, Kan.
I was in choir and show choir with Ashly, she was such a beautiful and talented girl.
I think of her often.
